Mine mounts that way too, but I thought it had a stabilizer strap that
mounted laterally to the off side of the engine. Perhaps, my air cleaner
housing was replaced with an older one.

On my 56 6 cyl there was no mounting strap. The air cleaner just sat on the
top of the carb and you tightened it on with tha thumb screw that tightened
a clamp around the throat of the carb.
