Re: [FWDLK] Dodge : Lancer LANCER in Dodge

Ref point #5, remember that Ma Mopar, especially Dodge, had a penchant to introduce "Spring Specials" with special chrome and colors to boost sales after the Winter downturn in sales, sprinting to the end of the model year, and the GL would fit in that same (specialized) mold.

I have a 2dr "Spring Special" 58 Coronet HT, with the special chrome treatments (side, rear, etc).

Brent,

The factory called these "Golden Lancer" in it's advertising literature. There is little available info on these, except a couple of brochures. In these, the facts are:
1. Gold & white paint, code X77 on the body tag. Ditzler has a color chart.
2. All are 2 door hard tops, a.k.a. "Lancer". No convertibles.
3. They were available in all 3 models: Coronet, Royal, Custom Royal.
4. Interiors had special gold colors on the trim & paint.
5. These were introduced in the middle of the model year.

They were advertised for their "power", but that was not defined. All of the ads show D500 flags, but the ad text makes no mention of D500. Of the ones I have seen up close or advertised for sale, a high percentage has been D500s: about 50%. While the base engine in a Royal or Custom Royal was a 315 Poly, the Coronets I have seen have all been at least a 315 Poly upgrade instead of the 270 base engine. From this I infer that the minimum engine was a 315 Poly, probably a 4 bbl, in keeping with the "performance" image.

Popular opinion was the GL was created to compete with or take advantage of the 56 Plymouth Fury's image. All of the other Mopar brands had a special model (300, Fury, Adventurer) that was their performance car, except Dodge. Dodge put the D500 engine in anything the customer wanted.

What exactly is a "Golden Lancer" in terms of equipment ?  As Dave mentioned, I would assume they
got the gold and white paint as a matter of due course per the name, but I have never seen ANYTHING
from the factory stating what these cars were, or if they were even a factory "package".

It seems odd that for how well known the name is, they never got badges or any special designator.
It seems to me to be little more than some bullshxt term dreamed up to hype up what was otherwise
just another car that happened to have that paint scheme.

Back when fins were more commonly seen as drivers, people often popped off with the term "Golden
Adventurer" too.  This is a car I know plenty about, and there was no GOLDEN Adventurer, and some
weren't even painted gold !  It was just some lingering term from back in the day that people had associated
with some high performance model, and I suspect this was REAL or IMAGINED !

What do you guys know about this ?

A REAL Golden Lancer would have the correct paint code on the body tag. Otherwise, it may be just painted to look like the one that went through Barrett Jackson a few years ago at $215K. After that one, they started coming out of the woodwork at high prices. Also, I am not positive, but a GL being a "performance" image like a Plymouth Fury, should at least have a 4 bbl carb. This one is a 2 bbl.

It would be worth more if was a real Golden Lancer. I requested a photo of the body plate from the seller, but never received it.

Seems like a very nice 56 golden lancer, but I would think it will bring a lot more than the $19,400. it's at now…
