Re: [FWDLK] Seat Upholstery

Just my two cents.

Unless you have professional upholstery skills and equipment, give it someone that does this for a living. Otherwise you will make all the rookie errors and it will end up no better than what you have now.

Subject: [FWDLK] Seat Upholstery

I am researching re-upholstering the seats in my ?56 Dodge Custom Royal.  I believe I am foolish enough to attempt this myself.  Here is a list of novice questions.  Can anyone help?

1.     Seat construction materials ? My car was poorly re-upholstered.  They (unknown upholsterer) used a sheet of burlap to cover the springs.

·         Would webbing be better, stronger?

·         Are there synthetic materials that would be more durable than burlap?

2.    I think I want to replace the cotton padding with foam.

·         What kind of foam is appropriate for automobile bench seats?

·         The original seat was smooth without detail contours.  The seat covers were flat sewn patterns with no shape except the basic shape of the seat. How is foam carved into contours to make the seats more comfortable and attractive?

·         I would like the heat melted tuck and roll to actually be tuck and roll with a slightly raised contour on the front edge of the seat.  How is that done.

3.    The ?56 Dodge seats had an attractive pattern.  I would like to keep that pattern but add a touch of luxury.  Are there any ideas that make upholstery a ?cut-above? (pun intended)?

4.    Is marine vinyl a good product for automobile seats?

5.    The seats have a Jacquard fabric with chrome welt and vinyl.  Are there any precautions when sewing dis-similar materials?

Any help is appreciated.
