Re: [FWDLK] Converting from generator to alternator

All,

While we are on the subject of generators and alternators, I would like to mention an important safety item.. All of our cars are around 60 years old, and many or most still have the original wiring. Such wiring usually has very brittle and sometimes missing insulation. Our generators are often as old as the cars, or made from rebuilds as old as the cars.

Should the wiring, voltage regulator, or generator short to ground, the battery can supply an unlimited current, enough to burn out the wires in the charging circuit, if you are lucky. If you are less lucky, the red hot wires may start the insulation of fire before the wire burns out and the current flow stops. Wiring fires may spread to the entire engine compartment. There are no fuses in the charging circuits.

The safety solution:  NAPA P/N VRF 35.  Voltage Regulator Fuse 35 amp.  These bolt onto the regulator terminals and will burn out before your wiring if something shorts out. Very inexpensive. I have had these on my cars for decades.

John:

I have inserted the URL of an article I wrote many years ago when I converted my 300F to an alternator.  Also, I have attached a photo.  I have no idea if the '57 Dodge wiring is similar to the 300F but the schematic in the article may help you out.  Hope it helps!

By the way, my fee for this information is one (1) 1957 Dodge Custom Royal in fantastic condition.  You can send me the keys and the pink slip immediately.  I will pick it up.

Good Luck.

Has anyone converted their Forward Look car from a generator to an alternator?  I have a 1957 Dodge Custom Royal that I’ve been thinking of converting, and wanted to know if anyone has done this already, what tips they might have, and how it’s worked since the conversion.  Thanks!
