Re: [FWDLK] Converting from generator to alternator

Greg,

I bought the fuses at NAPA, but they were Echlin VRF 35 (amp) Voltage Regulator Fuses.  Maybe they are no longer available.

I attached a couple of pictures of mine on my Dodge's regulator. They are a small ceramic block screwed onto the regulator terminal, with the wire on top. A thin section of wire connects the top and bottom of the fuse.

I've tried searching online for "NAPA P/N VRF 35.  Voltage Regulator Fuse 35 amp." and haven't been able to locate.

Are you referring to adding a fusible link?

What years were the power steering pumps mated to the generator? That would make it difficult to convert.

Also, Many alternators put out more amps than generators, and the wire going to the ammeter might be undersized for the job.  I Read an article somewhere about bypassing that or adding a parallel circuit so as not to overload that circuit and cause a fire.   Can't find it at the moment.

Great information Dave; thank you for the great tip on “safety.”  I am re-wiring my ‘56 Ply and will incorporate this feature with all the other electrical upgrades I have incorporated.
