Re: [FWDLK] Lower Grill Guard

Years ago I knew a guy who had saved a stack of “newsletter” kind of paper stuff that was published
between an association of independent wrecking yards to network finding parts, so some guy walks in
asking for a 57 300 hood, I might not have one, but a quick scan through the “newsletter” showed that
yards A, E, and R had 57 300’s.

These all dated from 1962-64-ish and were mindboggling for the cars being junked.  The kind of stuff
we’d all shat ourselves over today were just 5 year old “junkers”.  I’d read them and feel like someone
had just knocked the wind out of me.

I guess that can be said for many cars, but many were " just old cars " back then.  But the hardest hearted scrap guy would have to say, maybe I should skip this one. I am very anti-GM, but even I would pass over any old classic anything.

You are also correct. Attrition through use and scrapping before interest in restoration came
about led much of what was “out there” to vanish forever. I often ponder where the other 468
1958 Fireflite convertibles went, of the 474 produced. I find it impossible to accept that anyone
could see one of these magnificent cars and just let it rot in a field or pull the lever on the crusher
…. but they did, and LOTS of them did ! Even as junker cars, that is 468 complete top mechanism
assemblies, convertible frames, top wells/wheel tubs, special convertible top trim … just gone !

Such a blind waste.

I thought that they got destroyed doing there job and that's why there is not many survivors left, same for front bumper Wings, right front being the most damaged?

Could we see a photo of this "grill guard"?

This was not a popular option. I remember few back in the day and in old street scene photos,
they just aren’t there. Most people I have spoken with about them do not think they enhance the
crisp lines of the front end on these cars, and I suspect that is why they never sold new in large
numbers.

For the option junky, a real desirable piece !
