Willard was one of the oldest quality lines of batteries supplied to Detroit over many decades.  My first car was a '38 Dodge and Willard was supplied at the factory in that car also.

No the dealer did not specify.  The factory kept 2 suppliers going in case one went on strike or the warehouse burned down.  Willard and AL were Chrysler's choices and whatever was on the assembly line that day went in the car.  No record kept.

I'm responding to this "forward" as I have not yet received my original.  As
per usual, you have been most prompt, thorough and understandable in your
response and I'm sure we all appreciate your ongoing support in this area.

Lt. Columbo, here, with just a few more questions.  
As the Willard battery was optional in 1955, whose option would it have
been?  Chrysler's or the ordering dealer? 
Was the Willard a "Heavy Duty" battery or considered to be a premium battery
over the Auto-Lite?  Do the plates or specs of the two optional batteries
differ?
Have you or anyone ever seen, photographed or retained one of these old
6-Volt Willards to document its markings, i.e., molded in vs. stick on?

For now, it appears the Antique Auto Battery 6-Volt Willard with the tar
top, exposed cell link bars and red caps would be the most authentic
reproduction.  It does seem that if someone reproduced the single word
Willard (or Auto-Lite) on a sticker and reproduced the red caps that these
could be purchased and slapped on a generic black battery and more than
satisfy Club judges and other interested observers.

Rich and All:
The 1955 AMA specs state the standard battery for the C300 is an Auto-Lite 
2H-135-RD. Optional is the Willard MW-2-135-R. These have 19 plates per
cell 
and a 135 Amp. Hr. rating. The 2H is an SAE designation.

Now, regarding Gloria's noting of the 1960 AMA specs using Autolite instead

of Auto-Lite. I checked the 1961 and 62 AMAs and they also use the 
non-hyphenated version. However, the 1960 service suppliment continues to
use 
Auto-Lite. The picture of the battery in that publication is just not
clear enough 
to make out the hyphen. In 1961, both the AMA specs and serv.suppliment
use 
Autolite, while the Service Manual uses Auto-Lite! 1962 is the same with
the 
hyphenation, but the AMA specs add an optional battery---a Gould-National.

By 1963 there are no more Auto-Lite/Autolite batterys listed. Instead, 
Mopar is stated to be standard. However, when mentioning other electrical
items 
like coils, Auto-Lite is again used in the service Manual. AMA sticks with

Autolite.

Finally (for me, anyway) Autolite/Auto-Lite seems to have disappeared in 
1964. Batterys are listed as "various", and when talking about other
electrical 
items, only the names Chrysler, Essex, and Prestolite appear. This is 
compatible with what George Riehl stated earlier about Auto-Lite becoming a
Ford 
subsidiary about this time.

I did not bother to look at the parts books----think I spent too much time 
on this already!!!

Hope this is of some help to somebody! Additions/corrections welcomed.

Thanks to all for contributing to this design/equipment detail.

But, I'd like to take this opportunity to again ask if anyone feels they
really know for sure what brand or brands of 6-Volt, positive ground
orientation batteries originally came in 1955 Chrysler 300's.
