Use grease for sure! A liquid such as WD40 can and will migrate up the 
cable into the Speedo Head. As the cable spins, the liquid lube is 
thrown into the head on many cars, and eventually (if lubed enough) 
shows on the face or drips out of the head. Been there, done that.
