I have had this happen more than one time with batteries - the
connection fails within the battery from the post to the cell and while
everything looks good on the outside, there is no current path on the
inside. Then, suddenly as it failed, the connection restores itself.
This only happens a few times however before the battery fails
completely.

I remember driving cross-country from Detroit to L.A. in my 1952 Plymouth.
(Wish I had it back.) It was a non-stop trip and we had been driving all
night at freeway speeds. As I pulled into a gas station, the bump at the
driveway was all it took to put me into complete electrical failure... No lights,
engine or anything. I coasted to the gas pump, wondering what I was going to
do in a strange small town in the middle of the night.

One small twist of the ground cable on the battery, and all was well.
Apparently the continuous high amperage of the lights, etc. had put the connection
over the edge when I hit the bump.

Not bad, though, considering that it was my "Go-to-work beater, and that it
had no preparation for a hurry-up trip!
