[Chrysler300] For those of you NOT converting to discs

For those of you NOT converting to disc brakes....

1. Always use bonded linings - NOT riveted. According to the '57 Ross Roy book, riveted linings are a loss of 15% of the total lining area. You probably never thought about that!

2. I have only seen this in a '57 DeSoto service bulletin but it must apply to all center plane Mopar brakes: The factory dimension for how much the shoes should be ground under the size of the drum is a suggested .010 to .024". Now personally I don't like to give a machinist a .014 tolerance so I request that my shoes be ground to .015 undersize the drum. This is never an exact machining because of the material but it is something for him to shoot for.

Another point worth mentioning that on each axle the drums themselves should be very near equal in dimension. They started at 12.000". If one got replaced over the years, or one ground and not the other, you could have a WIDE variation in drum diameter between left and right and this is going to result in pull because of the difference in swept area. So, before you arc new shoes, I recommend you near-equalize the size of the drums obviously to the larger of the two.

Depending on the manufacturer of the OEM or aftermarket drums on your car, most brake drums have a turning limit of either .060 or .080 oversize before they are considered unsafe by the manufacturer thus requiring replacement.
