[Chrysler300] Oil Additives possible bad side effect?

More possible angles re modern oil woes/quandries.

I have been using a 1971 El Camino as a daily driver/hack, parts hauler re my 300 and other classic car projects, and have covered about 20,000 miles over the last near 3 years - suburban short haul and odd country 1000-1500 mile trips. Lately I noticed it seemed/sounded firing out the exhaust, like burnt or recessed exhaust valve/valves, this despite runing lead replacement additive. So I did a comp test, found at least 2 cylinders on around 50 lbs, instead of 180. It had a pretty strong maybe 370bhp 350, and needed 100 octane, so I thought, yep valves crook, and decided to put in a 400 small block I had, this closer to original 402 big block.
After I pull the 350, it on garage floor, so I figure what was problem, pull the heads, and vavles not looking the real problem, but the bores are still cross hatched like new, look semi glazed. And so when I ask how does this happen, I am told by well versed current engine builders, likely the oil I been using to protect my cam and lifters, is the problem !!!!!

So how do we old car guys(gals/bi's??!!) win - if our cars need oils that ptotect our cam/lifters, yet at same time glaze bores !! Is the answer indeed, to run oils that are for diesels, rather than put additives in high grade motor (car) oils !!!

Sorry to open this 'oils' can of worms again, but based on my experiences, beware of 'friction modified oils', or adding 'additives' to modern car engine oils. And maybe take heed of our members who suggest go the diesel oil route !!?

Good news is my El C with the worked 400 (actually about 406), really hauls, and I have only lost 1 mpg on country running - just did 1500 mile round trip.

Christopher in Australia, gas prices now around $1.05 a litre, which even with a 2.55 diff in the El C still swallows enough dollars when doing 1500 miles in couple of days. ( Last trips in my 300C saw about 20 mpg on flat easy country running at about 65mph.)
( For farmer 300 member in US and o/seas, grain crops being currently harvested in southern Australia a disaster most areas, those that were not earlier baled or had sheep turned in onto - whilst in Aust north east upper parts, up to 10 inch a night thunderstorms/hail have caused $1,500million damage to houses and cars the last three days - with this tipped to go through until March by long range tipster guru !! )

Yes, here we go again.I am at peace with the premise that there is enough protection for my engines in the high quality conventional engine oils I use without additives. And, I do have it on good authority, and it does make sense also, that adding ZDDP can be harmful when overdone. So, what I do is use 15W-40 Long Life Pennzoil or Shell Rotella 15W-40 (and there are others that work also) or if my concern is heightened or I need somthing like a 10W-30 oil, I will use an ACEA A3/B4 rated synthetic and leave lubrication chemistry to people I really think know what they are doing.Warren AndersonSedona,AZ[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
