Where are you located?

I also have a D hardtop.
Curious to know, does your car have factory A/C??

Sounds like you are low on fluid.
There is supposed to be a foam rubber sleeve around the restrictor to 
silence it and keep it from rubbing on anything.

Make sure the fluid level is correct and the hose is routed away from other 
components especially the exhaust manifold.

Hope this helps. I'm sure others will chime in also on this.
