1) Australia was not metric in the 50s or 60s, I think we going metric in the 70s or early 80s.

 

A '58 Cadillac convertible of mine that was supposedly sold new in Switzerland had a metric speedo, so parts of Europe were definitely metric around the time of hemi and ram 300s.

 

And a 2 door '76 (Ford) LTD Landau I have that was built in Canada has a metric speedo, so likely Canada had gone metric by then?

A hopefully final word on core plugs - or welch plugs. Many 300 owners likely may use a professional engine builder who may fit new core plugs as part of that job. Or they might fit new brass ones themselves after getting any needed machine work done.

 

All I wish to say by commenting on this annoying to some topic, is if those plugs are not fitted right, and one pops or falls out, your motor and radiator likely will emptty in about 10 seconds if at driving speeds. And unless you smell the hot radiator water on the only few seconds it hits your exhaust, you will likely do severe major damage to your engine if you do not shut it down before it seizes up in maybe the next few minutes.  And the other bad news is even if you do not ruin/seize it, firstly you are marooned, second refitting most core plugs, is either a hoist job, or worse, maybe pulling the motor out is easier if all doubtful/faulty.

 

So anyone restoring a 300 that uses the saucer type plugs should be 100% positive they are fitted correctly. Apparently there is a tool that only flatten the raised curve the exact right amount. The other second most common means seems hitting a flat hammer anout 3/4 size of plug with another hammer. (and I not so sure as one member suggested using a socket fitting mainly round the edge will be as good/strong as using the flat part of a hammer flattening from the whole centre inwards is??)  But the key point is whomever or however done, the raised curve must never be hit so hard it dishes in - once it has a dish in - even in it's centre, it loses it's tension on the hole it is in.

 

So for now, all one needs know, is if it is original type plug, just a quick visual check should be able to tell you if yours are OK. If you seem pretty sure your 300 ones are right, when you come on some road hog, slow driver, you can drop your 300 back a gear, and run it up to max revs with no fear that just as it gets there, a plug blows and you have the embarassment of the car you just past drive right on by as you pull off the side of the road in huge clouds of steam. With sound core plug fitting, soon your road hog will just be a likely very impressed smaller speck in your 300 rear view mirror as you finally ease back on the throttle.

 

Those who have done this 'sudden blowing out of a plug as they kickdown to pass' will know what I am talking about - others are lucky not to, but hopefully now know how to maybe avoid this.

I only mention all this here now, as more and more nowadays many modern engine builders do not know about these old core plugs used in many 300s, and you will only find that out too late sometimes.

Hi All,
My research tells me that this speedo is likely in KPH. The 1962 parts manual lists pats numbers for 120MPH, 150MPH and a number for KPH. I asked the vendor if there were any identifying numbers on the speedo, but he said there were none. This speedo would not have been destined for Canada, because back then all autos made and purchased in Canada (even US made models for export here) came with MPH speedos. It seems that the KPH speedo would have been for export to europe or Australia.
