I had a thermostat never open on an L, with A/C. It blew the lower hose off at the water pump, so I drove dry 'til funny noises and smells. Got it to a cruise-in location, let it cool. The coupling that holds the thermostat can be removed w/o messing with the A/C unit--you just put on and take off the 7/16ths open ended wrench a lot. Much jiggling will allow you to get the bolts out, and the cover and thermostat off and out. I had a carquest brand in there, and replaced it with a NAPA w/ a little hole in the plate, which encourages fluid movement and opening. Undertaking this chore w/o removing the A/C is a patience builder which will make you a better person.
