  Living in So Cal from the late 40's though the early '80s, I do remember reading of the speed quests of Norm Thatcher. Never got even slightly close to his world except what was in print. But, he was a 'local' (like so many others of course back then). And, then there was the Chrysler dealer in Pomona, the Ford dealer in Covina, etc., etc.

  Question would be, have you explored Norm Thatcher as the subject of a genealogy search?
