Simplest place to start would be to measure the 
voltage across the battery terminals when the 
engine is off, when it is idling and when it is 
revved up a little.  The voltage should be around 
12 volts with engine off, a little over 12 at 
idle and around 13-14 volts running at 
speed.  Turning on the headlights for a few 
minutes before starting the car will slightly 
lower the charge and allow you to measure 
charging voltage.  If you don't find a raised 
charging voltage then further checking is needed.
