Well, mine is a '57 cast iron mixer, but if yours works the same in the 
'62 you will have to release just the transmission end of the cable.  
Then you can carve off the loose failing part of the cable cover, clean 
the cable sheathing really well, slide the shrink tubes over the end and 
heat 'em into place.

I think I put about a 10" or 12" length of shrink tube over it, shrunk 
that one, and then shrunk another shorter one over the top of the first 
right at the fitting for good measure.  You want to get the first one 
long enough so that it rises above the level of your trans fluid in case 
you don't obtain a perfect seal to the cable cover.

I hope your cable removes from the trans easier than mine does.  I 
noticed that mine definitely enhanced my vocabulary.
