Most car as you back in time had all mechanical systems vented to the air; Gastank. Differential, Transmission, Engine, and earlier Radiator and some later positive pressure relief. Some/most tanks were vented at the cap; And if a modern fuel cap is used it may not/ will most likely not be vented and the negative pressure builds up and then you found out what can happen....

My 62 300H has a vent line from the tank to the outside-do the earlier cars not have such a vent?
