[Chrysler300] Alternator gauge 1964

Gents…..have a seriously cooked alternator gauge from a 300K. I have a spare but is there a bench check to see if the used one is working? No number of hook ups with jumper cables makes the replacement one move even if I use a jumper from the red behind the gauge to 12 v and a black to the car with headlights off and on.
