Years ago, when I was willing to tackle any automotive problem, I had a
similar experience.  I rebuilt my wife's 1966 Buick 2-speed auto tranny,
but had one check ball left over.  Net result: the transmission would not
shift up from first to drive unless the shift lever was manually moved from
L to D.  I got a Buick manual and found where that check ball was located
in the shift assembly.  Then it worked fine.
