I’m no expert on the ’55 PowerFlite, but some combination of internal or external adjustments must control that shift point.  Until you get those fine-tuned, I’d suggest you lower the dagger on the dash to L for Lunge.

Fun with numbers:  5,200 RPM, 3.54 axle, 29” OD tires>126.7 MPH—close to its record speed in 1955.  With a 1.72 low gear ratio, the Brute ought to do about 73.7 MPH @ 5,200 RPM.  That would be screaming but seems to provide a reasonably-high passing gear.  55 MPH in low would be 3,880 RPM –all numbers assume 0% slippage in the torque converter.  I’d expect that slippage to be on the order of 5% at maximum RPM.

 

I hope you get a few more warm days to enjoy the ride with fewest possible annoyances.

Rich thanks for the tip, I’ll give that a try. The C-300 is at hand if weather should turn fair for a short day, in the meantime I am dealing with annoying issues like this one which the car has more than enough of.

 

Another issue:

George Riehl used to advertise that he could 300-ify your transmission if the original had been replaced at some earlier stage with a standard one. The opposite has apparently happened to my transmission, when it would previously hang out in 1st to at least 50 mph now after a rebuild that number is only 35 mph and highly unsatisfactory when using the car in the spirit of George. Is there anyone currently doing the 300-ifying of transmissions that could e.g. rebuild a standard Powerflite to correct 300-spec? My idea would be to get hold of the trans in the US and ship it to Norway after the rebuild.

Are you still driving your C-300, or have you parked it for the long winter?

 

The retaining springs of the reproduction caps don’t always engage the inside lip of the wheel hub tight enough to prevent clanking.  A design or production deficiency, I believe.  They are still difficult to pop off, but fit loosely.  I stuck a ¼” wide strip of foam weatherstrip completely around the undersides of the caps and solved the problem.  I had to crush the little strips to get the caps on, so a little bit goes a long way.   All of my repro caps needed it and the fix is invisible. The weather stripping has a self-adhesive side after peeling off a paper cover.

 

Our 1955 C-300 has Motor Wheel & Rim brand, 48-spoke, 15” x 5.5” wire-spoke wheels & reproduction caps (with thin chrome).  The wheels had been restored by a previous owner and stainless steel spokes installed.  I’ve had to replace one broken spoke.  The car still has a wonderful old set of Remington L78x15 bias-ply tires with 3” WSW on it.  Low miles, no cracks, supple tread.  Someday, I’ll pony up the bread for a set of radials (or wish I had) as the tires must be nearly 25 years old.

On the subject of «hubcaps». Anyone got a good way of eliminating squeaks (actually rattling) of wire wheels caps? On my C-300 one of the repro caps is so noisy that I usually pull it off when driving for slightly more peace of mind and being able to listen for anything else falling apart.. There is no evident broken or missing stuff on this cap compared to the others.

Good idea.  How about something to reduce the squeak and squawk of the wheel covers on my '64K while driving (slowly) as the rim flexes?    Pretty evident while creeping thru CA traffic. Maybe the paint daub will help?

Can't recall where I recently read this trick, but it sounds like it might work:

 

Pull off the wheelcover and dab a little glob of paint on the rim on each of the scratches where the grippers have slipped and left their mark.  Then put the wheelcover back on the wheel while the paint is still wet.  When it dries the paint will hold the wheelcover on.  Be sure to repaint the scratches every time you remove the cover.

 

I have not needed to try it, but it seems like an easy little thing to do.  And it's just crazy enough that it might get the job done.

I have had the problem several times now, and in all cases they were fully installed and not at all loose before the trip. Luckely I heard them depart & was able to get them back, but I can't rely on luck forever. Any ideas?
