The natural color of all gasoline is clear. Any color to a gasoline then dye was added. We used to sell premium diesel fuel to a few truckers and farmers (most used regular diesel). We simply added green dye to #1 fuel oil to make Premium Diesel Fuel.

 

I've owned airplanes -- but ... alas ... it was long ago enough I don't recall if it was dyed. If I had to hazard a guess, my memory leads me towards a no. The 110 octane racing fuel I've purchased is clear.

My brother in law used to farm in Virginia. He had a fuel tank and pump on his farm to service his trucks, tractors and combines etc. Often people would stop by and ask him to sell them gasoline to keep from having to drive to town. He told them people had been stopped and the gasoline liked at for the color and it was a big fine. True? I have no idea, but his gasoline was dyed for sure.

Is avgas dyed? My understanding is that it’s considerably more expensive, so no one is buying it to avoid taxes, they’re avoiding ethanol.

Terry, I live in Canada but suspect this may be true in the US as well. Road and transit taxes, among others, are added to fuels sold for use on public roads that aren't added to marine, farm, and avgas. Use of those fuels on public roads amounts to tax evasion here so one must be careful what he/she admits to on public forums I would think. Going back 20 or more years ago, locals in farm communities around here sometimes had their fuels sampled by police to ensure they were not running 'illegal' fuel. The color was always the give-away as dyes were added to all fuels to identify more than just octane ratings. 

I'd be interested to know if this is still the case or if it was ever an issue in the USA?

Here in Dayton  (and I suspect many other areas around the country) I get non-ethanol 100 octane  leaded gas at my local private airport.   They just take my  5 gallon container and fill it right out of the fuel truck.  No questions asked.  Expensive, but just 5 gallons into a tank of non-leaded premium really makes my 300F run like a new car.  Terry Mc Taggart
