It would have been Flemish, although John spoke French as well. He was Belgian by birth. On our way out to the meet in Newark, California, we stopped in a town in Utah (Escalara, I think) and while we were wiping the car down these two guys were standing there conversing in a language I didn't recognize. John told me they were talking about us and the L. He proceeded to start speaking to them in the same language (Flemish) and actually embarrassed them quite a bit, although I never did find out what it was that they had said that they thought we wouldn't understand.
We wound up having dinner with them and I didn't understand one word that was said, but every once in a while they would all look at me and laugh which, of course, made me wonder what had been said.
