Re: [Chrysler300] 61 300G

Guy and Group,

I spoke with James at Diamondback a few weeks ago, and he's expecting the proper 14's will be available for us next year in Diamondback's Classic Series. I've got over 40,000 miles in my 8 year old Diamondbacks - vulcanized whitewalls on 6-ply Vredstein tires, that have been great for all the long-distance cruising in my F, and still with plenty of tread.

ps - keep sending me your Lynchburg Meet registration forms - looks to be a great Meet with many activities. Our Meet Registration form is on our www.chrysler300club.com website, under Events.

For a long period, this site was rife with tales of Coker radial tire failures (blowouts at freeway speeds and less) and the poorest customer service imaginable.  Hard to get past that history and regain trust.  Especially for tires that cost 3X what a similar standard tire costs.

The tires on our previously-owned ’55 C-300 were possibly installed as early as 1989.  L78x15 Remingtons (Canadian) 3” WSW and tube-type on wire-spoke wheels.  Wore like iron, still sorta white and no problems at 90+MPH.  Not smart, for sure, but that’s the way it was and possibly is.

PS: FYI on the Toyos: The family I bought the Hawk from live in Chatanooga and know the Cokers and they actually switched  from a set of Corky's tires to the Toyos since they weren't happy with the Cokers. I didn't ask for details as it may have been a switch from bias ply Cokers to radial Toyos, so maybe apples to oranges...

I have the Toyo tires on my G.  Also have had Toyo tires on a daily driver in the past and very happy with them. I think it is a Japanese company

Spoke with James at Diamond Back this afternoon and he stated 235!75 R15 was the correct size for a G. He advised of brands: Nexin & Toyo. Never heard of either one. I suppose they are made by a major company?

I second Michael.  My Diamondbacks are for superior to the Cokers I took off.

I have Diamond Back DB2 radials 235/75/R15 with a 3" white wall, same size whitewall as original tires. If you want the original look of bias ply tires then they offer those too. If you plan on driving the car I would go with the radials, I am very pleased with mine. They usually have a holiday sale with $50 off each tire if you can wait till December

8.00-15 nominal diameter 29.3 to 29.7 inches (variability by brand back then).

I think Coker now has some 8.00R15 vintage looking whitewalls not sure sidewall width, but 1961 was last of the wide whitewalls and they had gotten progressively narrower by year til they went to narrow white in 1962. There may be some better experts here, but as first responder, I would guess about 3 inches - not much wider.

225/70R15 (nominally 27.4 inch OD) equated to G70-15 or in your vintage 7.10-15.

227/75R15 (28.3 OD) H78-15 or roughly 7.60-15; 235/70R15 (27.9 OD) H70-15 (same load as 225/75R15 or H78-15)

235/75R15 (28.9 OD) J78-15 or roughly 8.00-15 - still slightly smaller OD and radials even at higher pressure will have lower static loaded radius (shorter sidewall with more bulge at bottom).

Hi All,

Now that I've sold my 61 Corvette my 61 300G gets all the attention!

Questions

1. What width size whitewall did the 300G come with?  I'm planning on buying Coker radials, The stock size was 8.00 - 15.  Would that equate to 225 70R-15?

2. I also need to do the brakes from stem to stern.  I was going to use NAPA for most of the parts.  Comments?  Recommendations?  Has anyone used s/s brake lines from Good Brakes or Brake Hoses Unlimited on EBay?

Thanks,

Mike  300G Barn Find
