The Mopar sealed batteries do look nice and you never have to water them and that’s all good. The downside is that you can’t service them, that is, you can’t add water if your charging system fails to the high side and you cook the battery. Also, you can’t check the state of charge with a hydrometer because it is not a flooded cell therefore, state of charge can only be determined by voltage testing of the battery, not revealing anything about the individual cells. The cost is about double that of a flooded cell battery, and the typical life is about 2/3 that of a flooded battery at best. I typically get about 5-7 years from a battery in my G. I buy the best group 27 battery I can find locally, bring in my old one, (usually NAPA stores), remove the decals and place a MoPar battery sticker on it. Looks nice, lasts a long time. I have extra stickers if anyone needs one, please send email to me off server.
These reproduction batteries seem like a good idea, but many reports here indicate they are substantially higher (twice+)in cost and lower in life-span and quality as compared to high-quality standard OTC batteries. I believe our concours judges do not deduct points for a standard black battery. I have seen stickers one can plaster to the outside of standard batteries that will further disguise the battery and one can peel off the various stickers from the top of the battery. I recall the original batteries in our 300’s had a different brand—Willard, I believe. Replacement batteries from a Chrysler dealer would have been the Group 27 MoPar battery in a 300K.
Brentwood, CA (Directly east of San Francisco—receiving smoke from the LA fires. Terrible conflagration in SoCal.)
Trying to spruce up the engine compartment of my 64 300K (413 4 brl) no ac. Looking to get a "Mopar" Battery from Antique Auto Battery. Is the battery a Group 27 with red caps or is it another battery? Any help would be appreciated. Also, anyone know of another dealer that is cheaper??
