Possibly a competitive thing - GM was doing the same with all models except Chevs at the time.

57 Sara, NYr, 300 --- 126"
Chrysler continued that practice up to 63 when
everything went 122". 

Seems like a lot of work -- 
you need unique fenders, hood, 
sub frame.......
pretty good chunk of tooling expense for 
your economy priced car.
