RE: [Chrysler300] American Classic radial tires





I would recommend removing and preserving the original tires and saving them for special occasions such as concours judging.  Buy a set of radials that match the originals reasonably and drive hard in confidence. 

 

In the trunk of my 1964 300K convertible-ram car, I have an early bias-ply spare—a 8.55-14 Goodyear Power Cushion with about 0.66” WSW and 1.15” black ring between WSW and rim.  About 5 3/4” tread width.  Just keeping it for reference.  Wish I could buy four nice radials in that approximate configuration.  The tire industry changed the tire size between 1964 and 1965 as the big tire on the ’64 was an 8.50-14.  From what I’ve seen, tire dimensions did not change much, if at all.

Well, that’s an easy decision, my 65 300L is original from front to back & I was hoping to keep the wheels & hubcaps!!! 

 

Amazingly after sitting for 25 years in a garage, it still has original bias ply tires. 🤔🤔

 

 I just had the AC serviced & charged with R12 & it’s getting super cold & not leaking!! 😳😳😳

Stayed with 14”.. Don’t want to change hubcaps or go to the 15” wheels with inserts to retain the 14” hubcaps. My 6-ply Eurospec DBacks were actually an inch too short, so the car sat a little low. That said, I put 55,000 miles on them in the past 9 years and it drove great. Long trips from Chicago to 300 Meets in NM, CT, NY, RI, VA, WV, AR, MO and more. Many of these trips were in driving rain (monsoon downpours 7 of 9 days to NM and back). New ACs are taller and the F sits higher and looks better, and drove fine to TX and back. We (John Begian in his beautiful black best of show convertible and I) have done a lot of this long distance cruising running our F and G together on flat as well as twisty mountain roads, and I’ve never felt the F was under-tired, typically running at 75 mph. 

I know I’m an anomaly, still running drum brakes, dual points and 14” tires, but the F has performed great, and I have no intention of changing these.

Put American Classics on my F this year. Drove it 2400 miles trip to our Dallas Meet from Chicago, and they performed well at speed. A little different (read - softer) feel than my 9 yr old Diamondbacks that had 55,000 miles on them. American Classics will take a few more wheel weights than did the Diamondbacks. Make sure you mount all weights on the backside of your rims.
