Re: {Chrysler 300} C300 coil springs

from the perspective of the spring engineering , putting wedges in the turns is a bad idea as it shortens the spring length in action and for the same suspension travel  will tend to overload the remaining turns . That could bring the spring into yield of the steel in psi further collapsing it . So forget that. You are correct John
The higher spring rate implies thicker wire and actually less stress in the spring —unless heat treated wrong , or something weird , the real 300 spring should be a lot more resistant to “ weakening” or “ taking a set” which happens if spring is overstressed even once ( big pothole / worn out shocks) . In normal use really should not gradually collapse especially 300 ones? Designed to last life of car +?
Good shocks will limit collapse excursions of the spring .. like pot hole
That says — if unable to find, — putting a machined disc say aluminum   under one end (if possible ) is probably a reasonable thing to do — imho      .
Some one of the aftermarket suspension guys ( Heidt etc) might have knowledge or access to springs by sizes — not specific by car or truck brand    . some modern application may fit .
Imperial or limo may be stiff ones too.

Jack,

What is not included in the report below is that on C300s the rears were 7 leaves and NYer and Windsor were 6.  I suspect installing the twist spaces in the front coils will only provide a more harsh ride.  When I purchased our 300B those were in it and the car had still settled so much one had to lift up on the front fender to slide a floor jack under the car.  My thought is these spacers may have weakened the already tired springs even more.

I have this in my notes:  Front: C-300: 800#/inch, Rear:  160#/inch;  NY: 480/100; Windsor:  480/90 as per AMA specs.

The stiffer ride of the 300 no doubt caused many Chrysler buyers in 1955 to buy the more comfortable riding New Yorker.  The 300 did get them into the dealership though.  I don’t recall our C-300 to have that stiff of a ride.

I have never heard definitively as to whether the deflection rate is per spring or total of the two.  If 800# is placed on the front bumper and it goes down 1”, each front spring is loaded to 400# and the individual spring rate is 400#/inch.

I do recall little metal wedges that could be forced between spring coils to jack the front end up.

Still suffering seller’s remorse and our old C-300 is for sale again.

My front springs are tired and probably should be replaced. I called Eaton and they don’t have them, won’t have them and don’t have the specs for them.

Any ideas or sources?
