I am well versed in trim and moulding fasteners and the type you suggested are called flat nuts. The type needed perform the same function as a tubular nut as used for the "300" on the hood. The letters require a small rectangular version which may be called a rectangular nut.

Flat nuts require access to the back side of the surface so they can be pushed onto the stud of the trim script. There is no access to the inside surface of the hood front, hence the need to install the fastener from the outside so the letter can be pushed into it as the numbers are in a tubular nut.

Search "script clips" and your year of car on eBay. You can get an assortment or all 1 size. I don't know of any Chrysler vendors that sell them, I haven't checked.
