Re: {Chrysler 300} 300K exhaust manifold gaskets

When the block and heads were made and had a nice  smooth surface, gaskets were not required. The problem with gaskets is that most need to be re-torqued a few times as they shrink from the heat. I used to use them all the time, but even with re-torqueing, they still burned out. If the manifolds are flat and pit free, you can use a light coat of high temp silicone sealer, which is what I use now. My Imperial with 440 has been set up like that for 2 years now, and not a leak anywhere.

Dumb question but why wouldn’t we use gaskets?  For any exhaust interface?  As long as they are good quality, and won’t be prone to leaking.  I like the kind with graphite crush.  I’ve also seen where some folks use hi-temp permatex to coat the gaskets.

I use 7/16-14 stainless bolts and locknuts for the manifold-to-pipe connections.   Not saying they’re better, but hopefully easier to remove them in the future than the (usually) horribly rusted carbon steel bolts and nuts you often run into.

So I had some cracking noises develop at start up when cold and sure enough, I found the manifold nuts barley tight both sides, and no gaskets. Somebody was playing here. Manual says 30 ft/lbs torque for the nuts.

I searched the parts book and it is a little vague to me. Do the single carb 360HP engines use exhaust manifold gaskets, or not? The parts book calls for them for the ram and hemi engines.
