RE: {Chrysler 300} Knocking

It is important to know if you have detonation or pre-ignition going on. They sound similar, have separate causes but cause similar running problems and if severe enough engine damage. A carboned up engine with hot glowing debris or improper spark plug choice can cause detonation. Wrong timing and insufficient octane cause pre-ignition. Both are the "light-off" of cylinder contents before the proper moment. Both put tremendous stress on pistons and connecting rods as well as rob power from the engine.

I'll assume your 300 is for occasional use and recommend the following: Set base timing with a timing light to specification. Add 3 gallons 102 or above race gas (available at many Sunoco stations) and fill the rest with high octane pump gas. Then bump the timing ahead in small increments as far as you can without any pinging. This will have your motor producing optimum power. Driving around with retarded timing to be safe is no fun. This will marry you a cocktail of race gas, but the car will run great, and the smell of race gas is to me as sweet as baking cookies.

If you want to skip the gas, as others mentioned set the timing as ahead as you can with no pinging.

Thanks I think I have a lot to play with.

It's ok to have a very slight knock under hard acceleration (slightly noticeable knock is the operative phrase).
