Re: {Chrysler 300} Urban Legends

Big error there , probably in the book — a good friend had a383 ram stick 61 station wagon , rode in it many times . It was bought brand new . His brother had a 1960 361 commando stick 1 4 bbl coupe .
About the same with slight edge to the wagon .wagon  had hd suspension and tow etc . they raced each other constantly .
Probably ugliest car chrysler ever made , but really fast …

In 1961 I was working at an electrical shop in Pecos, Texas.  One of my co-workers was a young Mexican lad who was proud of his 1957 Chevrolet.  He took me for a ride one afternoon, and we were doing right at 100 mph when a finned Chrysler swept right by us like we were standing still.  Gotta love those long straight Texas roads.  Shortly after, a Highway Patrol came by us in a new Plymouth.  Shook our car like a semi going the other direction.  About 5 miles up the road he had the Chrysler pulled over.  I have no idea what engine was in the Plymouth, but I would estimate he was doing 140 mph or better when he passed us.  That was not a run of the mill cop car.

For 1961 Chrysler offered a police package on the newly reintroduced Newport called the "Enforcer." It used the Dodge 325 HP 383 and all the police stuff including higher spring rates, anti-sway bars and the like. A wagon version was offered and the whole package lasted through 1964. 61 versions did not wear any "Newport" badging.

Massachusetts State Police used Chrysler wagons for at least one year.

Question for the group:

> In 1972, I was hunting for some parts for a white 300K convertible we had at what was then a Mecca salvage yards in those days in Deer Park, Long Island ,NY. I spoke to the owner of one the yards and he spoke almost reverentially of some of the Chryslers that the New Jersey turnpike state police supposedly had as pursuit vehicles at that time in the early’60’s.

Does that ring a bell with anyone or is  that just an “urban legend”?

In a related story, I was told on multiple occassions that the MA State Police used ram-equipped cars as pursuit vehicles around 1964? Not sure they were ram-K's, or just Chryslers equipped with the ram engine option. They could be seen almost exclusively on the relatively new MA Turnpike?
