I'm not a 58 owner but my 60 & 61's have no such spacer, just the chromed escutcheon. However in my case the buttons slip on the forks and the years have lessened their tension. So when I trailered my 300 F to Audrain Concours last fall buttons came lose on the trailer ride with the cars nose in the air, especially over the Newport bridges.  Upon arrival, with only minutes to get on the show field we winched the car down only to find the reverse button had slipped off and fallen behind the trim. Thank Almighty  I still had drive.  We purred over the grounds as though nothing happened but when I parked I realized I had no neutral button and would not be able to restart. A quick call to Don Verity informed me I needed an Allan wrench and a Phillips head to fix it, which I did but not before the judges arrived and asked me to start it...

When we arrived home the buttons had worked loose again. So in my case it’s the vibration of the trailer. Don says to spread the forks a bit to get more tension on the buttons. I've not done that yet, but thinking John that this is your problem as well. Pull the plate and examine how the buttons slide on the forks. 
If I am wrong a smarter fellow will say so. 

At the 1:50 mark on the video below you will see my F purr its way to its parking spot. As you watch keep in mind that I have no working transmission buttons, I have no idea if I can fix it, I am perspiring copiously and my wife has her hand on my leg saying ..."remember why we are here...stay calm."

Hi , all, 
I have a 58 where the front metal plate that guides the transmission push buttons seems to be missing a piece behind it that centers the buttons in the slots in the outer chrome trim. Or ? Wrong trim vs button size ? 
As a result the buttons wave  around and even can fall behind the chrome (D button ) ——which can get to be a lot of fun at a gas station pump  ! 
I vaguely remember a piece of felt there too , but maybe there is a plastic guide with 5 holes ? 
If anyone has the part or info , greatly appreciated  . Don’t want to be known as that guy with fins that blocks the pump ..
