Agree with all you say , on the forks ; however they are hardened steel and attempting to spread them , one half can snap off. Then you are really utterly screwed have to get into whole new box , messing with cable adjustment  etc . I have had that happen . So forewarned . What does solve that looseness on forks is judiciously applied weatherstrip adhesive . You can still pull it off but now you won’t be in there again , ever ! 
I have had many 300 , agree the 60 rides on bezel , sometimes a felt pad to keep light from the bulb from glaring out . That is often tossed . 
On 58 the holes in the plate are grossly oversized , maybe 1/8” larger than button all around it . I am almost positive from memory another piece centers it . 60 was probably a cost reduction as part of new dash . If you think about it chrome sleeved buttons will scratch on bezel , but probably first gen they thought about it and made a sliding non scratch bearing surface , but still needed nice chrome front. My thoughts anyway ..
