That’s adjusting the timing by feel… which is fine, but also if you have a vacuum gauge you could use that as well to set initial timing at idle (connect gauge to manifold vacuum, then at warm idle, disconnect vac advance hose from the distributor and plug line, then advance the timing until getting the max vacuum reading, then back off (retard) timing an inch or two of vacuum).
I’d imagine there are as many ways to set timing as there are club members 🤪…
