RE: {Chrysler 300} Turbine car on the DC National Mall

The turbine has a regenerator/heat exchanger at its exhaust to boost efficiency and cool the exhaust. A bigger heat exchanger would boost efficiency and cool the exhaust further. But adds weight and consumes space. Fairly efficient systems can and are built at stationer power plants, pumping stations and similar installations where weight and space are available. Physics, metallurgy, consumer needs and financial considerations are not yet aligned for land vehicles. Dr. Diesel’s engines cost more but readily achieve high efficiency, especially when in the turbocharged and intercooled/regenerated configuration and are currently the engine of choice in heavy trucks and railroad locomotives. Gas turbines are the engines of choice for airliners where exhaust temperature is not an issue while offering light weight , low cost/HP and superb performance at high altitude.

R&D on metallurgy, design controls, and experimental engines in different applications will lead rational consumers to optimum combinations in the future—as they have in the past.

I saw one when new in front of the Boston RMV .

It was idling ; I remember huge amount of hot air coming out the back ,? Turbine exhaust ?

Too hot to stand near back bumper . I remember thinking this can’t be very efficient , but wild looking thing , copper color .

Years later I bought both a 68 charger and 70 challenger 440 convert , both copper color . So that car had an impact !!

I think steam has more promise . Seriously .—-with modern tech … ??

But all fossil fuel on way out , especially if so inefficient …

Jay Leno had driven his turbine car to the Mopar show in LA at least two times that I have seen it. I didn't know it had been sent back for work. It would cause quite a bit of excitement as he drove it in and then walked away to go look at the cars in the show. He's done that with several other of his cars he takes there.

The Petersen museum had a turbine car and engine on display last time I was there but that has been several years ago.

Looks like we should have more west coast 300 meets since there isn't enough time to see everything in one go.

On the DC National Mall, today, one of the remaining Is on display "Cars on the Mall"
