Thanks John.  The sender wire termination was touching metal it turns out, so it sounds like that explains the high right needle.  I re-installed the sender and connected the wire.  Ran the car and nothing.  Read no pressure.  Then at some point while the engine was warming up it started working.  Needle at low end of acceptable scale.  So maybe there is a bad ground somewhere or else the sender orifice could have been clogged then become unclogged.  (?)
Anyway thanks for the advice.  I will also pass on the Napa part number to the group if they can get a correct sender.
