Re: {Chrysler 300} battery

Hi James,

My experiences with the 6-volt battery box started through Packard's International years ago.  There was a member/vendor that offered them and as I recall he was located in Corona, CA.  The only issue with those was the post location was reversed from what our cars use.  This was corrected by simply having longer battery cables built.  I haven't seen or heard of this source in sometime now.

There is a place in Costa Mesa, Ca., Woody's Custom Shop, that is owned and run by Charles Rollins, 949 722-1084 or 877 435-6911.  I was there yesterday and picked one up and to my surprise his box offers correct location for the battery post for our cars.  Cost was $89.95 but in today's market that is realistic IMO.  The killer is the cost for the 6 volt Optima but I'm lucky as I have a source via a friend for a very good deal but sadly, I can't get them for friends.

Last for some of you locals in SoCal I use Powertron in Santa Ana, CA 800 400-4858 for my 12 volt wet style.  They are less $$ than Costco and Walmart and the last one I purchased was under $100.  Also, they are family owned and run have been around for years.  Currently one of those is going on seven years of use with no sign of failing.

Hi John,

I have one of the correct looking boxes in my 1949 Desoto Convertible. The one that goes to Concourses. The 6-volt optima fits in that. I have not seen a MOPAR case that will take an Optima, but I have not looked hard either.

To the others…

Not trying to beat a dead horse, but his 300K is not being done for show. It is being done to use as our only daily driver. So, when I ask questions, sometimes it is with that in mind.

I am one of the very few people I know that ONLY drive classic cars. Even my most hard-core classic car friends, some of which have dozens of cars, all have at least one “modern” car they use daily.

Given the lack of quick parts availability and the like, I am looking at the places on the car where a modern upgrade would be in the interest of the mission for the car.

I also make sure that I do nothing that a good car guy could not roll back in a weekend if one every wanted to.

Hi Bill,

I've been an Optima user and fan for over 30 years.  Just yesterday I replaced a wet cell in one of my 6 volt cars with an Optima and battery box.  Now all three 6 volt cars have the same.  I'd like to know your source for these boxes and also I'm curious as I've never seen a 12 volt box that looks like a wet style.

Hope all is well with both of you and we look forward to seeing you in Texas later this year,

Being a lifetime fan of Optima batteries, both 6 volt and 12 volt versions in Mopars (C 300 and '56 Dodge, etc.), Porsche's and motorhomes,  remember the "cloaking devices" or fake battery box enclosures that look rather authentic to hide the horrible Optima look.  No more wet batteries for me, ever. . .

Hi Bob,

Remember this car is going to be THE daily driver and for x-country use. I am not worried about stock appearance. I have concourse cars for that.

I second Danny’s recommendation.  Buy the best flooded battery you can, be it from Costco, Napa, O’Reilly’s etc.  Flooded batteries look most original, are serviceable, and give the longest life.  I have heard good things about Optima, but I’ve never owned one due to the non-stock appearance, high cost, and lack of serviceability.  I get about 7 years from flooded batteries in my G, and boost charge about every 3 months when the car is not driven.

The bigger battery won’t fit the hold down. Optima makes a good battery that will not tolerate overcharging which nearly all available regulators today do. I would go to Costco for a discounted Interstate flooded battery or Walmart.

My opinion. Others may vary. However I have 9 cars for a long time and have learned the hard way.

I am going to pick up an Optima Battery.

The stock unit a 27-MB-70 was 12"L x 6.75"W x 8"H.

Optima has two batteries:

  1. The redtop 25 has 720 CCA and is closest on width and height to the original.
  2. The redtop 34 has 800 CCA and is a little wider than the original which may mean the cross over hold down may not fit.

Anyone have any experience with either battery both in terms of fit or function?
