Following up on Nick's comment, a thin flat wooden paint stir stick, that we find at any commercial paint or Big Box (i.e. Home Depot) store, slides perfectly between the top of your grille and your hood. Push it back against the hood latch and the hood pops up.

I always carry one in the trunk of my F - just in case.

People have bought longer aftermarket cables and replaced them. Hardest part is getting the old cable out of the handle and securing the new one. Hopefully someone will post more details.
