Re: {Chrysler 300} "Batwing" air cleaner

Thanks for the mention of my air cleaner identification site.

If anyone sees anything that needs correcting, please let me know. I update it when I learn new things but the page gets a lot of traffic.

I created it many years ago because I'd see the same questions over and over on forums about air cleaners. Or people were selling ones that were misidentified. Especially ones they were trying to pass off as more expensive versions.

Nick.

Hi Rob,

Regarding your questions I can offer the following:

Chrysler used the "DELTAWING" (proper name from Chrysler) for thier 1955 C300 and 1956 300B examples.  These look the same on the outside, but the pods are different interior between years.  In other words, I've found you can't interchange an inter with an outer from different years.  DELTAWINGS are the only ones that have four (4) indented ribs running fore and aft.  All others I've seen are smooth on top.

DeSoto had a version only for their 1956 Adventure and it is different as all others regarding placement and height of the necks to attach to the carbs.  Also, there are Caddy, Chevy, Pontiac and Packard versions out there.  They were all made by A C Delco and some mounted with the V pointing towards the firewall.
.
To find the correct DELTAWING for your early Letter Car can be expensive, so make sure you get what you are looking for.  I would suspect the DeSoto versions are also rare and costly.  You mentioned Dodge but I've never seen such.

In conclusion I'd verify the manifold will fit your motor and then mount the carbs and carefully check spacing against air cleaners you may find.

Best of luck in your search,

Hello all, just a couple of questions on the '56 2x4 air cleaners found on '56 model cars.

I believe the '56 300s came with these, and apparently all Chrysler models that offered a 2x4 barrel option ran a similar air cleaner.

1. Are there any differences between the Chryslers, Desosts, and Dodges?

2. Are the GM ones similar? Could they be made to work, as it appears there is someone reproducing these.

3. Im basically asking all of this because I will be picking up a '56 Desoto and though it is currently a FIredome car, the current owner is "throwing in " a factory 2x4 intake. I have several WCFB's off other hemis..... and Im thinking I can take two of them to make them work, I would just like the super neat factory 2x4 air cleaner for this setup. If anyone has one for sale, I would be interested in talk about that too!

Thanks for the info everyone......

Rob
