RE: {Chrysler 300} Paint Codes

James:

All this is based on my experience restoring our ’64 300K rag several years ago.   I think our car is pretty but not a great match to the original.

First R:  Roof color paint code-Royal Ruby Poly (even if it is a convertible)

Second R: Lower Body paint code-Royal Ruby Poly

The “1” defines styling—monochromatic.  A 2 would indicate a two-tone car. ’64 Silver Specials and NY Salons have 9’s in place of the 1 or 2 to signify the black vinyl roofs on these beauties..

Blending current paint types and colors to match the original is challenging.  The process is to take a photo of a desired sample and let s computer find the closest match.  Finding the proper level of “poly” or aluminum powder is another challenge.  1964 “poly’s” don’t have that much.  Then the shop shoots sample squares for direct comparison to the accepted original reference surface.  The club has the gold standard for matching—sample squares from Chrysler—used by concours judges.

Don’t rush it, make sure the color and poly match are satisfactory to you and have a good chance of matching the gold standard,

Subject: {Chrysler 300} Paint Codes

The 1964 300K is going to the body shop tomorrow for new paint. The build card shows a paint code of “RR!” while the tag shows a paint code of “RR”.

Can anyone tell me the difference between the paint codes of  “RR” and “RR1” ?

What does the “1” stand for if anything?

What I am trying to figure out is did they use Acrylic Lacquer or something else in 1964 so we know how to deal with the factory paint prep for the respray.

Thanks, James
