Maybe this process will help someone. YMMV but I’ve been installing brass freeze plugs (413 wedge, also 383 and 361 I believe are all 1-5/8”), by using a hefty 3/4 drive 1” socket to get the freeze plug started straight. This is for installing concave. You can use something hefty that fits down in the concave of the freeze plug fully (picture 1). A center hit might work if installing convex. I always install concave like originals seem to be.
Using the socket (or similar tool) to tap takes patience and requires you to just barely get it started straight in then use a brass drift to gently tap it in real slowly going around opposite sides of the outer edge as you do it (picture 2). Once started good you can increase tap force. A lot easier with engine out than trying to do it laying on the ground holding heavy tools up. But done it both ways.
Not familiar with the hot heads ones.

even better , hot hot heads has machined ones with a step held by a SS bolt into a T bar arrangement, like a flybolt anchor . Has O ring Today’s mechanics do not know how to set those .Has to be hit dead center just hard enough, ball peen hammer , (which hit is pretty hard ) if not set they fall right out Happened to me twice , especially the smaller ones in head , very first run , 2 miles from home . Much mayhem ensued . On Jul 17, 2025, at 12:14 PM, Ray Jones <1970hurst@xxxxxxxxx> wrote:
