i have run purple shafts and never had problems,
a couple of 64 and 63 guys i know consider them junk
and would not touch one.
 
it is evident, what works for one will not necessarily
work for the other, that is really the neat thing about this
forum, though i disagree with some, i still learn something
from every response.
 
i am not a pro, nor an amatuer builder, but when talking
cams with some people, it is just easeir to say 3/4 or
full race rather than rattle of durations and lifts, which
alot of people don't understand anyway.

When I first started putting my big block together, I purchased the cam, 
lifters, valve train etc. from Hughes Engines. When I broke the cam in, I had 
too weak of springs in the Holley secondaries and the engine revved up on it's 
own (using just the outer valve springs) and after checking everything I 
found that the two lifters on number 1 cylinder froze up, (and I do mean froze 
up. You couldn't pry them out)and caused the pushrods to bend plus bending both 
valves. Okay, part of that was my fault. I got everything fixed and made 
sure none of the other valves were hurt.
I called Hughes, told them what happened, ordered new lifters, (fortunately, 
I had two extra push rods). They told me I should have used their burnishing 
tool that they sell. Ordered that too for an extra $25.00 or so.
Got the motor back together. Drove to several car shows last fall, no 
problems. I was babying the car though, never got on it.
I thought I'd put some extra miles on the car before putting it away for the 
winter. I decided to take a drive to a little town north of me on the 
Expressway, (about a 30 mile trip one way). Never made it! About two-thirds of the 
way there the motor started making noises again. Got towed home, pulled the 
top side apart again and guess what? Another lifter had froze up in the bore 
again. Nobody has ever heard of this happening on a Mopar engine. Same as 
before. You couldn't pry it out. Had to pull the front of the motor apart, take 
out the cam and drive the lifter down and out. After inspecting the cam, the 
lifter hung up in just the right spot and flattened the lobe on the cam.
So, I ordered a Mopar cam and lifters and installed it. I said to myself, no 
more babying this thing. It's either go or blow. I broke the cam in and took 
her out on the street. Power braked it and put it to the wood. Man, this 
thing pulled so hard it made me light headed. Pulled 4 shots like that and each 
one felt the same.
Something else; when I miced the Hughes lifter and compared it to the Mopar 
lifter, the Hughes was .001 bigger which could be the problem. I called them 
again and the sales/tech guy said they have been having problems with the 
lifters they get from the manufacturer. (Why didn't they tell me this from the 
beginning?) Plus he told me that EVERYONE who sells lifters, gets them from the 
same place. I don't believe that at all.
Anyway, just wanted to pass this along to anyone thinking about getting a 
new cam, lifters etc. this winter. You may want to check around with different 
companies.
