Re: Poly Valve Cover Gaskets

Gary- Beautiful Engine restoration!! Thanks for sharing.

I also have a '56 Dodge Coronet with 270 Polyhead  Stromberg 2 brrl & Powerflite Pushbutton Drive. I put in an original  Chrysler Dual Point dizzy!

Ran great till Master cyl died at 49 years old, Lousy MOPAR part, wouldn't even last 50 yrs. Have only had to do Tune Ups. No major engine work, 68000 Wonderful miles!

So the car is 'In the Q' as I could not just replace the MC. The Line connections were all rusted at the T, and soI am rebuilding the entire brake system. I didn't like the looks of the wheel cylinders although until the MC died, everything worked fine.  But at my & the car's age, Safety 1st. Got all the parts from Andy Bernbaum & a line kit too.

I learned to drive on my Father's 56 Coronet. Now Dad was Army Air Corp '26-'29, Pilot & Mechanic; then Auto Mechanic in the Bronx & then Radio Engineer with the Signal Corp WW2.  Transferred to Rome Air Development Center in 52.

Had a 48 Dodge Custom with Fluid Drive, Same body a Chrysler  New Yorker with 3rd brake light, mohair interior.
That summer a Valve got away  on the Dodge Getaway 6.  I   handed him tools sitting on the Fender and ' Turned the wrench quick' as he set the valves. So I can legitimately say I've been working on Engines since I was 5.5 yrs old.

In 56 he Factory ordered the Coral Rose, Gunmetal Grey Metallic, White top/ Taillights with the 315 Hemi, 4brrl of course and Dual Exhaust.

We put on Dual Antennas on the fins (so cool) and listened to the 50,000 Watt stations Boston, NY, Chicago in Uostate NY ( Griffiss AFB).

So when I came across this base Coronet V8 Sedan in 2003, I had to become its caretaker. It's Yellow, Gunmetal Grey & White, as in the ad. Know Dad is Laughing at the 'Base Coronet'! But it is a Beautiful 56!

Thank you for the picture Gary!  And that Poly is the 55-58 Dodge 255,259, 270, 315, 325 Poly series that are a group unto themselves but also have the "three-bolt" style valve covers...the 1956-58 Plymouth 277-318 Polys with six bolt valve covers are near identical and share many parts with our 1962-66 Poly 318 engines.  Picture of a rare 1957 FP31 290HP Dual Quad Fury motor that we built back in 2003.  It indeed made the Factory advertised 290HP...and that was without tuning.  And the red valve cover engine is a 1956 277 Power-Pack Poly that we built much earlier.

Here's a photo of the earlier poly engine using a valve cover with 3 bolts holding the valve cover down.
