I believe Firedome was the name for the DeSoto Hemi. Chrysler Hemi's (which were different) were called FirePower (stamped on the valve covers), and I think Dodge Hemi's (also different) were called "Red Ram" or some such.

The unique trademark moniker for the early hemi was the "Firedome Hemi" which I don't believe was ever used again after those engines became extinct in production...

I've been following this thread as a 392 Hemi fell into my hands about 10 years ago. I had a set of 915 heads that were given to me. Yes, free of charge, nada, zilch for them. An acquaintance happened by one day and saw the heads and wanted to know if I would sell or trade for them. And yes, I knew what they were as he obviously did too. Ended up trading the heads for a complete 392 that he said he had running before it came out of the car. Tore the motor down and there was virtually no wear on the cylinders or bearings. The engine numbers indicated it was a 58 392 out of an Imperial. Since then, it's been completely rebuilt with all standard rings, bearings, etc, hardened seats in the heads, 340 oil pump, etc. Just need a project for it to go in. Was going to use it in my 65 Coronet convert (obligatory 62/65 content) but pretty much decided to keep the poly. Yea the big block guys will say go for the hemi and poly guys keep the poly. Both do have eye appeal. As a side note I know that the early Hemi is not a big block in the 383/413/440 context, although it's plenty big and heavy. I guess it's just considered an early Hemi?
