Does not sound right to me,,,,,,,,,,,even with hard  cranking,,there should 
have been some evidence of something happening when you  hit the key 
reguardless of temp.      I am guessing  that the batteries are trunk mounted, and 
possibly even a disconnect in trunk,  are your connections all good, and are your 
cables heavy enough to handle  the extra length
