Damn this charging system

Keep thinking I got it licked with all the good advice that comes in, 
but here goes again:

64 Dodge 383. Why would the meter show the charge go in the opposite 
direction from the rpms? Evertyhing was showing a fine charge, then a 
squeaking noise from the new alt, and this reverse charge the faster I 
go!

It's a two field alt, with one field grounded.

Is there a way to simply bypass the regulator with a jumper wire to see 
if that's the problem?
