Re: That distinctive Mopar starter whine

I have read that the distinctive sound was due to reduction gearing, which
resulted in the starter turning faster, which yielded more torque for roatting
all that engine mass better. This was one of many improvements back in the day
when Chrysler was the acknowledged auto engineering leader.

Once I replaced my old starter with the Dakota truck mini-starter, the good
old sound was no more. I don't know whether this newer starter is as speedy in
turns, but it does fine on a 11.2 CR 496 incher.
