the two wires that go to it are "IGN" and "FLD" wires,..  blue and
green (I think),, if you connect them it'll remove the VR from the
circuit.   sounds like an unlikely cuprit, but its good to rule it
out....

the single groove pulleys were also used on later higher amp alts
that weren't AC units.., too...

a real volt meter (or the volt meter part of a DMM) would be great
to tell you the charge...
