Re: rear axle seal. My God! No!

There is an outer oil seal on 8-3/4" axles. it fits into the retainer
plate. to change it, you need to break the bearing retainer collar,
and remove the bearing, get the retainer plate and change the seal.
really, at this point, you've damaged the bearing taking it off, or
at minimal you broke the collar, so your looking at a new A7 bearing
set (I think, A7K K for kit so you get the collar).

I did this on my wagon (66 B-body rear). doesn't happen too often.
if the axle end play isn't adjusted right, and the centering of the
axle isn't 100% handled by the bearing, that outer seal might eat it.

take it to a machine shop. or do it yourself. my friend showed
me how to do it. replace the seal, make sure the lip points the
correct direction.the bearing goes on next, then the collar.
my friend had a long pipe that fit over the axle with a plate that the
bottom with a hole to just fit over the axle dia. at the bearing..
I think we used it and a big hammer to press the bearing on, then
the collar.
